Gill Melling - Artist

I am an artist living and working in Devon whose art practice over a 30 year period has crossed several genres, from site specific installation, community facilitation to drawing and sculpture. I understand the world as a complex system and reflect this in the work I create and the life I lead. I have a PhD in Fine Art and have worked as a garden designer and mental health community worker for a number of years returning in 2017 with new focus to my art practice. I currently have a studio in Exeter.

Since 2020, I have been making art pieces about the impact of our industrial cultures of consumption on marine ecology. I use mixed media including reclaimed materials, such as fishing line or plastic; natural objects such as fish skeletons; photography, digital production and iconic imagery; and tools for consumption and cultural practices, to create 3d and 2d juxtapositions that take a slanted, entangled and sometimes humorous view. My intention is to ask people to think about how we are part of nature and how the environmental damage we create through our traditions and practices means damage to ourselves. As such, I am careful to consider the materials I use to make my point; thinking about the longevity of what I am making and the environmental footprint I leave.

Along with my residency with the English Riviera UNESCO Geopark in Torquay in 2025, I have undertaken two residencies in Estonia, in Tallin and on and ex-Soviet airfield in Haapsalu, along with residencies working with people living with dementia, residents of Exeter and with college students, making site specific installations, gardens and collaborative pieces. I have exhibited within the UK and Europe and was recently selected for an Emerging Artist Award, reflecting the new direction of my practice, to exhibit at the Thelma Hulbert Gallery during Devon Open Studios 2025 and for a bursary membership of CAMP (Contemporary Art Membership Platform).
