These artists impressions show a variety of gardens that I have recently and am currently designing. The artists impressions accompany hand drawn layout plans and technical drawings for landscaping features.

This garden was designed to complement a large two storey extension. The paving flows from inside the house to outside creating a seamless feel. Sharp lines sit against soft planting and flowing borders. The planting is wildlife friendly and combines perennials, trees and wilder areas, blending structure with a naturalistic appearance. At the rear of the garden is a large vegetable plot.

2021

Built by Northfield Gardening and Landscaping

This design transformed an under used garden space of an old cob farmhouse into the welcoming entrance and front garden that the house deserved and clients required. A large hedge was cut through to create an archway, which frames the entrance and invites you into the space. The garden is planted with perennials, roses and small shrubs to give all year round interest and a soft, romantic colour palette.

2020

Built by Halcyon Landscapes

Newly built in 2023, this design transformed an inaccessible sloping-lawn into a terraced tranquil and inviting space, incorporating handrails and shallow steps. The garden has been recently planted with plants that will spill over the hard landscaping and provide year round interest. Some larger shrubs and trees are still to be added which will provide additional screening, vertical interest and shade. Paving has been chosen to match existing slabs on a higher terrace with areas of gravel to give texture and softness. The garden had to be built without the use of machinery with full credit to Northfield Landscaping for their efforts and attention to detail.

2023

This historic walled garden was much neglected and over-grown. We created a large contemporary stone terrace with sun loving mediterranean planting. This overlooks sloping borders full of grasses that catch the evening sun and flowering perennials for all year round colour. A pond to one side has a gulley leading down to it with lush ferns and foliage plants.

A stone and brick courtyard with a built-in oak bench creates a cosy social space with scented and tactile plants. A lawn has been shaped to flow from the courtyard, and wildlife friendly planting gives all year round interest. Climbers cover the fencing to create a haven for birds.

2018

Garden built by John Mulberry

This garden was created with a team of health professionals and architects. It was made for people with dementia who visit the hospital for respite and recovery. With my experience of designing for people living with dementia, I was able to inform the layout and create a planting scheme with tactile, scented and flowing plants. Spaces have been made for vegetable planting, sitting, socialising and taking part in activities, as well as to walk through and stimulate the senses.

2013-2014

Like many new build houses the garden was left as a blank canvas. A garden was created with a stone terrace surrounded by abundant perennials and climbers. The small lawn was shaped to soften the space and provide flowerbeds with all year interest. An archway and trees add vertical interest to the garden and help to break up the views of houses beyond.

2014

Garden built by Northfield Landscaping Services

I was asked by the RSPB to create a wildlife garden to complement their hide at Bowling Green Marsh in Topsham. The hide is used by walkers, birders, schools and community groups and the garden provides accessible paths and spaces to view the marsh, picnic, appreciate the garden’s wildlife and for outdoor learning. Raised beds contain sensory plants and some echo the undulations of the water, whilst others are shaped as butterflies and birds.

The Cottage Garden is in rural Mid-Devon at the home of plant lovers. We worked closely together to design a series of spaces with different atmospheres. The simplicity of the lawned area surrounded by herbaceous planting and shrubs leads to a sunken seating area and through to a garden with gravel and brick paths dividing abundant flowerbeds. The bespoke metal archway is to create a tunnel of climbers which will provide mystery and eight in the garden.

Where a dis-jointed garden with lawn and over-grown borders made it unappealing for the owners, now a series of terraces flows down the slope providing spaces to sit, walk and soak up the views. The garden has large pots and urns as focal points and will be planted with sun-loving shrubs and ground cover, to create a mediterranean feel. Landscaping materials have been chosen to complement the architecture of the house.

This terraced garden in Exeter transformed an inaccessible slope into a series of levels with flowerbeds, gravel terraces and lawn. Rustic natural stone and paving contrasts with sleek lines of the timber retaining walls.
